Bryce Canyon National Park lies in southwestern part of Utah in USA. In spite of being named ‘canyon’ it’s most famous feature is a huge natural amphiteatre sculpted in the eastern flank of pink, orange and yellow sandston of Paunsaugunt Plateau. Within it tall spires – called hoodoos and reaching up to 60 meters rise. Area has been designated a National Treasure in 1923, and five years later a National Park. It has an area 150 km² and height of 2400 – 2700 m above sea level. Being further away from large cities is much less visited.
Bryce Canyon N.P. climate is rather temperate and, as compared to other parks in the area, rateher wet – total yearly rainfall averages between 38 up to 46cm. Average minimum winter temperatures fall to -13ºC in January, while maksimum average temperature in July rise to 28ºC. As for 2012 annular eclipse weather data, we can expect 74% chance of seeing the Sun – average number of partially cloudy sky to clear sky in May is 22 and only nine with full cloud cover. In case weather prospects don’t look good we migh decide to move observation to Zion or Grand Canyon National Parks.

Capitol Reef National Park is lies in south-central Utah. It preserves colorful canyons, buttes and monotliths along 120km long up-thrust called the Waterpocket Fold extending from Lake Powell northwest to Thousand Lake Mountain. Thus the park while quite long – actually about 160km long, is at the same time narrow – and most visitors pass through it briefly driving by State Route 24 leading through Freemont River Canyon. Much better appreciation for variety of Park’s wonders can be gleaned from Burr Trail, which is a backcaountyr road, only partially paved, leading into the park from Boulder, down the fold on a series of switchbacks, and then north, along Waterpocket Fold to SR24.
